Broadacre cropping’s future: active management and agtech

In the latest Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Update Papers, Hamish Munro (Pairtree) and Chris Geeves (Lightwood Consultancy) share their vision of what the future of profitable, sustainable broadacre cropping in Australia needs to look like.

In their paper, ‘Securing 200 more seasons: active farm management and digital integration in broadacre cropping’, the take home message is that there needs to be a mindset shift and smarter use of agricultural technologies (agtech).

“The mindset shift is embracing Active Management – being ready to adjust plans on the fly and farm by evidence rather than by habit. The technology shift is integrating digital tools so that data flows freely and guides decisions.

Together, these changes enable a more holistic and proactive style of agriculture that can satisfy the triple bottom line: staying compliant with requirements, remaining profitable, and being environmentally resilient.”
