The challenge of working out the best way to to deliver information and calculations based on complex modelling, with multiple variables, to New South Wales primary producers led to the development of an innovative Carbon Farming Opportunity online tool.
The unique tool was developed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) in collaboration with the University of South Australia.
Pairtree Intelligence provides the dashboard interface that integrates and presents all the complex calculations on a relatively simple, user-friendly NSW regional map with interactive features.
It helps NSW farmers visualise complex climate change and carbon sequestration modelling to work out the economic viability of the different carbon offset methods available to them, depending on their location across the state.
Users can explore how different future climate models impact the cumulative carbon stock for vegetation-based Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme methods, including reforestation by environmental and mallee plantings, and how changing carbon prices affect the potential financial benefits of participating in carbon markets.
It also presents estimates of changes in soil carbon stock achieved through changes in the amount of vegetation cover under different climate change scenarios.
Marja Simpson is a Research Officer in the Low Emissions Agriculture Unit at DPIRD who worked closely on the development of the tool.
“We realised there was very little information available to look at potential sequestration from vegetation spatially across time under different climate change scenarios,” said Marja.
“A unique feature of the Carbon Farming Opportunity online tool is to show economically viable opportunities under different carbon prices as well as impacts of future climate on carbon accumulation.”
“While it’s a valuable tool for primary producers, it’s also very useful for other stakeholders, such as government, agricultural advisors and researchers too.”
The tool shows indicative financial implications of changing land use along with background information and simple explanations of the key concepts.
